Do anti-cancer foods really work? The short answer to this question is YES. They really do. While studies are ongoing, there’s strong evidence that certain fruits and vegetables rich in plant-based nutrients can both prevent tumors from starting and halt their growth.
Here, the top foods to work into the family diet to cut cancer risk or help those with cancer recover.
Turmeric. The orange-yellow spice turmeric, best known for its role in Indian curries and other Asian dishes, fights cancer because of an active ingredient, curcumin, that’s a powerful antioxidant. Researchers at Ohio State University in Columbus reviewed numerous animal studies and concluded that curcumin demonstrated anti-cancer effects at virtually all stages of tumor development. Researchers in France and Britain also have been studying curcumin’s action in the laboratory and concluded that it prevents and slows tumor cell growth. Watch out, though; according to the American Cancer Society, turmeric made certain anti-cancer drugs less effective when studied in animals and test tubes. Cancer patients shouldn’t add a lot of turmeric to their diets or take curcumin supplements without talking to their doctors first.
Green Tea. One of the first plant-based chemicals to be studied for its anti-cancer properties, catechins — the chemicals in green tea — have been known for some time to prevent and reduce recurrence of breast and other cancers. With this particular chemical, experts even know why: a chemical known as EGCG inhibits breast tumor growth, a University of Mississippi study shows. Just two cups a day is enough to do the trick.
Garlic. Numerous studies over the years (more than 30 different studies to date) have documented the anti-cancer properties of garlic. The strongest evidence so far has focused on digestive cancers, but garlic appears to protect against all types of cancer, including breast and prostate. According to the National Cancer Institute, an analysis of seven different large-scale population studies showed that the more raw and cooked garlic a person consumed, the lower his risk of stomach and colorectal cancer; one study found that middle-aged women who regularly consumed garlic had a 50 percent lower risk of developing colon cancer. Scientists have isolated two active ingredients in garlic, allicin and allyl sulfur, and demonstrated that they prevent and fight cancer in both animals and humans; you can take garlic in supplement form but the capsules must be enteric-coated to protect these active ingredients. Add crushed, fresh garlic to your meals whenever possible; some experts also recommend waiting 15 minutes between peeling and chopping the garlic to get the full effects of the active compounds.
Broccoli and Cabbage. British researchers made headlines last year with a study that showed that men with early signs of developing prostate cancer prevented tumor growth by eating broccoli four times a week. Other studies have shown anti-cancer benefits from eating cabbage, brussels sprouts, and other cruciferous vegetables.
Blueberries, Acai Berries, Raspberries, and Cranberries. The rich, dark colors of blueberries, Brazilian acai berries, raspberries and cranberries come from phytochemicals that protect against numerous types of cancer. Most recently, researchers at the University of Florida found that the active ingredient in acai berries destroyed cancer cells when tested in cell cultures. And blueberries and muscadine grapes contain compounds that recent research shows cause cancer cells in the liver to self-destruct. In studies particularly important to women, cranberries have recently been discovered to be an important weapon in the fight against deadly ovarian cancer. Studies reported at the annual meeting of the American Chemical Society found that ovarian cancer cells that were becoming resistant to platinum chemotherapy — the standard of care for ovarian cancer — became six times more sensitive when exposed to a compound in cranberries. The anti-cancer properties of all these berries are so strong that researchers have been developing concentrated supplements and other products such as purees and concentrates.
Resveratrol . The hype about red wine centers on an antioxidant called resveratrol that’s present in grapes and grape juice, but is most concentrated in red wine. Numerous studies show that resveratrol possesses powerful anti-cancer activity. Teams at several universities and cancer centers are studying resveratrol’s effects against specific types of cancer. Most recently, a University of Nebraska study published in Cancer Prevention Research demonstrated that resveratrol suppresses the abnormal cell growth that leads to most types of breast cancer. Breast cancer is fueled by estrogen, and resveratrol acts to block the action of the estrogen, preventing it from feeding tumor growth. Previously, research conducted at the University of Alabama at Birmingham showed that mice fed a diet enriched with resveratrol had an 87 percent reduction in their risk of developing prostate tumors of the most dangerous kind.
Tomatoes. Harvard researcher Edward Giovannucci reviewed 72 different studies published by the National Cancer Institute, and concluded that lycopene, the active chemical in tomatoes, lowered the risk of many different cancers, particularly prostate, breast, lung and colon cancer. Subsequently, the FDA conducted a review of its own and disagreed, refusing food companies’ request to label tomato products with an anti-cancer health promotion message. However, many experts believe the FDA’s process was flawed and that tomatoes will be vindicated by further studies. The good news: cooking tomatoes seems to enhance the effects of lycopene, qualifying tomato-based spaghetti sauce as a nutritional powerhouse.
Soy. The active ingredient in soy is genistein, which is a phytoestrogen that protects against hormone-dependent cancers. It’s also a powerful inhibitor of several proteins that are implicated in the uncontrolled growth of cancer cells. To get the anti-cancer benefits of soy, you need to consume about 50 grams per day of the whole food, such as raw fresh soybeans, known as edamame, dry roasted soybeans, or tofu. The research to date shows that supplements containing isoflavones don’t work with the same action as soybeans themselves and in fact can be bad for you rather than good.
Onions and Leeks. According to the National Institutes of Health, studies of people from Southern Europe who eat a diet high in garlic and onions show a direct relationship between high consumption of “allium” vegetables (all types of garlic, onions, and leeks) and reduced risk of many common cancers.
Watercress and Spinach. Researchers in Ireland released studies in the past two years showing that eating watercress everyday can prevent the DNA damage that leads to cancer. Research published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition – but conducted in Ulster where people are more comfortable eating watercress — found that antioxidants in the nutrient-rich greens prevented free radicals from damaging healthy cells. Spinach, which we’re all more familiar with, is also a cancer-fighter; research conducted by the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Texas showed spinach to protect against bladder cancer. The chemical that gives spinach its dark green color, chlorophyllin, proved to reduce the risk of liver cancer in research by the National Academy of Sciences. Who cares about muscles? Here’s a much more important reason to eat your greens.
The Bottom Line
None of this is to say that an anti-cancer diet or nutritional supplements should be used in place of doctor-recommended treatments such as chemotherapy and radiation. While there are members of Caring.com’s cancer community like Joel MacDonald who are using nutrition to battle their disease and have interesting stories to tell, the experts in this field strongly recommend that those who’ve already been diagnosed with cancer use anti-cancer nutrients to bolster traditional medical cancer treatment, not to replace it.
(I do not agree with the article’s conclusion. I believe that alternative anti-cancer treatments CAN replace traditional treatments like surgery, radiation and chemotherapy – Randolph)
A great resource for those interested in learning more about making dietary changes to prevent cancer or cancer recurrence is a new book, AntiCancer: A New Way of Life by David Servan-Schreiber, an MD, PhD, and professor of psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. At the age of 31, Servan-Schreiber, one of the founders of Doctors Without Borders, had a brain tumor surgically removed. After exploring the research on the connections between diet and cancer, Serban-Schreiber embarked on a series of lifestyle changes that he credits with preventing his brain cancer from recurring. Two books by nutritional biochemist Richard Beliveau, Foods That Fight Cancer and Cooking with Foods That Fight Cancer, provide specific lists of foods and cooking suggestions that make following an anti-cancer diet straightforward and simple.
Lifestyle and diet. Make changes and you will live longer.
Personally I believe very much in Gerson.org. Download their PDF brochure. Their Norwalk Juicer extracts 3.5 times more minerals than the closest all in one competition. The inventor Dr. Norman Walker died at 117. The extracted juice reaches the body’s blood circulation within around 30 minutes and without need for the patient to digest the juice which normally means less fatigue for the patient right from day one. Minerals are needed to reconstruct the body and strengthen the body’s own immunity defence.
Regarding Garlic it is rich in Germanium and so is ZamZam water, Holy Christian Water from Lourdes, Lingzhi, Ganoderma and some other mushroom I don’t remember the name right now. Germanium decreases the need for oxygen in the body as it makes the body utilize the oxygen in a more efficient way. Cancer loves glucose and lack of oxygen. Cancer thrives with fermentation in an acidic environment. Oxygen and less carbohydrates helps the cancer fighting in the body. Germanium in its organic form (uncooked, unfried, raw fresh) is also good against strokes, no matter if bleeding or blod clots, as well as heart attacks. However the most efficient garlic might be a special sort I haven’t tried myself. Go the Chinese medical shops and ask for black or blue garlic.
Regarding Turmeric http://www.alterni.com/ has a kind that is accessible to the body 100%, not just around 1% like the turmeric one finds in shops. Personally I take just 1 third of a capsule since I have allergy issues. Turmeric is also good at making the red blood cells soft and able to reach peripheral very small parts of the blood vessels. It can help against Dengue and fights virus very well.
The highest amount of antioxidants can be found in Kei Chee. Number 2 is Blueberries, but perhaps only 20% of the amount of antioxidants compared to kei chee = wolfsberries
Dont forget to check out gerson.org. It took me around 12 years to find out they are probably the best of all cancer clinics. And I have studied at least 100 books about the whole conspiracy aspect. Any doctor mentioning Gerson.org in USA risk losing his/her job. So Gerson must be good. Anybody want some once upon free videos from them just send SMS to 016-6224084 with your email
Wasalamu Alaikum / Adam Testad (not a doctor)
Thank you for your very useful comments. Yes, I have read quite a bit on the Gerson therapy. In fact, I witnessed a young man in Subang Jaya with tongue cancer a few months ago (half of his tongue was burnt through radiation and the doctors wanted to remove the whole tongue!) who was on the Gerson therapy. His sister, a qualified pharmacist, helped the mother in administering the Gerson therapy to this young man. As far as I could witness, they were following the therapy closely. He was contemplating going for B17. In fact, this young man had researched the internet and had imported B17 but did not know how to administer it. The family was contemplating to switch the treatment to the B17 protocol but the father resisted, saying the Gerson therapy was doing some good.
This young man died a month later. The cancer had spread to his throat, he had difficulty breathing, and was rushed to Pantai Hospital where he lasted only 9 hours. In this instance, it is my opinion that the Gerson therapy was not potent enough to save him, even after a few months of undergoing it.
The juicer you mentioned sounds very good. I will check on it – thanks!
Having said this, I also think B17 is a little out of fashion today, as there are over 350 alternative cancer cures available, most of them quite powerful. My wife is living testimony to this. She went through two B17 protocols (that probably saved her life in hospital) and is now on two very different protocols plus a selection of vitamins/supplements.
Sorry to hear about the tongue patient.
However not all so called organic food in the shops is organic in Malaysia. As an example Zenxin has 3 or 4 farms but only one single very small farm is certified organic. When we buy the Zenxin brand we don’t really know if it is certified or not. Certification in other countries means certification all the way to she shops including packaging and transport. In Malaysia it is only certified at the farm.
“BMS Organics” shops have the name organic in their shops name, but the products are in general neither certified nor grown organically. (Compost Grown).
Some of the farms, perhaps all, have very low production in the beginning. Perhaps the first 7 or 8 years. See the web site for LOVG vegetables sold at Giant certified by NASAA. Now after 10 years he can just throw a seed on the ground and it grows, http://thestar.com.my/lifestyle/story.asp?file=/2008/4/22/lifefocus/20915181&sec. A low production is normally a sign of low mineral content and not enough earth worms. Minerals is mainly what makes the plants grow without artificial fertilizers.
The first problem is the ingredients. Gerson in Tijuana Bay with office in San Diego chooses the best ingredients. And they have much to choose between. In Malaysia they stamp the word organic on everything that is grown without pesticides it seems
The second is the quality of the juice machine. 3.5 times more minerals out of the same ingredients, see the Gerson PDF brochure at the web site (http:www.gerson.org)
The third problem is variety. The shops with the most variety seems to be shops like justlife, EcoGreen and Eden Garden Organic. Still we have to visit the farms, like TitiEcoFarm and Kenko to really find out if the products are really top quality organic, be they certified or not. Gerson even teaches their producers how to raise the quality. I have not visited the farms yet
The fourth problem is detox. Gerson has a way of transporting out the toxins described in their onceupon a time free video which I can send in a limited amount of copies to anybody who wants. SMS 016-6224084.
The fifth is their personal individual evaluation of the patient and administration of specifically needed substances.
I am not an expert but I think we don’t have the resources here in Malaysia to administer Gersons method to terminally ill cancer patients. I sincerely hope I am wrong.
I would recommend such patients to get to Gerson at San Diego or perhaps to Philippines where there they are supposed to have a real Gerson hospital. I heard there was one built outside Singapore / Melaka also but I lost information about that place years ago.
However if a cancer patient is not terminal then we can perhaps experiment with the best of the best we can get here in Malaysia and try to get as close as possible to Gersons real methods.
